The Kosher Choice Prevails
People are like plants - you don't always see the growth, but before you know it, they are all grown up.
In my years of mentoring youth, sometimes you get a moment when the growth screams out and says, "here I am!"
I had one of these moments last week.
It was winter break for a group of college boys, many whom I've known since they were in elementary. They decided to go on a two day trip to Kalahari Water Park to have fun. And fun they had! Splashing, lazing and sliding.
So much fun that they didn't realize how hungry they were... until they left the park.
"That fried chicken smells real good", said Abram, "I think I'll go make an order."
But his friends refused. "We keep Kosher," they said.
It took some back and forth for Abram to realize that his friends were serious. Abram remembers his days not very long ago when he would go out with his friends to their favorite restaurants: Chick-fil-A and Chipotle. It feels like just yesterday, yet now his friends decide to take their hunger to a local gas station and go Kosher seeking until they find something to fill their stomachs with.
When they just began keeping Kosher, they expressed how hard it was, and how they would even avoid walking down certain streets with non-Kosher food smells so they won't be tempted to get a taste.
And now, they mastered it. They have overcome. And I am so proud of each and every one them.
Oh, and Abram: I am sure, that you too will soon join them. |
